Author: Ira Stoll
A cousin of John Adams, our second president, Samuel Adams was a
fearless Christian patriot who gave God the glory for the establishing
of a new nation to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.
Believing that God had willed a free American nation, Adams was among
the first patriot leaders to call for independence from England. A
fiery newspaper editor, he railed ceaselessly against "taxation without
representation."
The idea that especially inspired Adams was religious in nature: He
believed that God had intervened on behalf of the United States and
would do so as long as the citizens maintained civic virtue.
A central thesis of this biography is that religions in large part motivated the founding of America. Samuel Adams: A Life reminds us who Samuel Adams was, why he has been slighted by history, and why he must be remembered.
