In the 1600s and 1700s, Christian education was a fundamental part of
the American dream for a new society.
After 1865, however, religious influence on education in America
waned. By 1900, nine out of ten students were enrolled in secular
schools - only one in ten in church schools. Government money in
education was soaring; and with the investment of tax money, government
controls increased, and the literacy rate dropped.
