A Whole New Level

| Josh Shields

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
—John 12:3

It is six days before the Passover, and they made Jesus a supper that Martha served. Lazarus was at the table, and Mary came to anoint the feet of Jesus then wiped His feet with her hair. Why her hair? Paul wrote to the church at Corinth and said hair was given to the woman for her glory—not God’s glory, but her glory.

Considering the life Mary had lived, the rumors about town left her with a less than good reputation to say the least. Now she is wiping the feet of the Master with her hair. How could she dare to do such a thing? This is her glory/dignity, the only thing left of honor, obedience, or righteousness in her life. Scripture declares our righteousness is but filthy rags to the Lord. So she gets down and humbles herself as a servant using her glory as filthy rags on the Master’s feet.

On our best day, our righteousness is nothing more than filthy rags, to say the least. We really haven’t much to offer Jesus. What could we possibly give the Lord that He hasn’t already been offered in some kind of deal? What? Your home, cattle, business, vehicles, money? None of this impresses the Lord. Heaven is His throne, and the earth is His footstool. The cattle on a thousand hills are the Lord’s, and you want to offer Him what? Considering the lives we have lived, do we really have anything left to offer Him? The answer is no. All Christ wants is for you to humble yourself and give Him all of you.

Our prayer for you this week: May you start today to take your relationship with Jesus to a new level, giving Him what you have to offer, YOU
