Dangerous Decisions

President Trump tapped controversial televangelist Paula White-Cain as the head of the newly created White House Faith Office on Thursday, Feb. 6. Aiming to promote religious freedom nationwide, this initiative seeks “to address anti-Christian bias within federal agencies,” according to the appointee’s website. This office will work closely with the U.S. attorney general to combat discrimination against Christians in three-letter government agencies like the DOJ, IRS and FBI.
When announcing this new commission, President Trump gave few details, other than saying, “It’s going to be a very big deal, which will work tirelessly to uphold this most fundamental right [religious liberty]. Unfortunately, in recent years, we’ve seen the sacred liberty threatened like never before in American history,” reports Religion News Service.
Set aside the political debate on whether such an office should exist. Of all the Christian leaders Trump could select to lead this new initiative, choosing White is puzzling and troubling. Known for espousing the prosperity (fake) gospel, this false prophet now holds a powerful position in the White House.
Paula White: a False Prophet
Viral videos reveal White’s false prophecy made during a November 2020 prayer vigil just before the presidential election. During public prayer, Paula said multiple times, “I hear a sound of victory,” and, “The Lord said, ‘It is done.’ ” Further, she announced that angels from Africa and South America were coming to secure Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.
Joe Biden became president, not Donald Trump. White’s prophecy did not come true. Therefore, she is a false prophet. The logic is simple and the Bible backs it up.
The Mosaic law demanded the death penalty for false prophets. God said, “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die” (Deut. 18:20).
How could the people recognize a false prophet? Verse 22 explains: “When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”
If a prophet delivered a message in the name of the LORD and it did not come true, then that person is a false prophet and deserves to die under Old Testament law. The people were told to ignore the false prophet and his fake news.
This is how seriously God takes false prophecies. I’m not advocating the killing of White or other false prophets, because we are no longer under Mosaic law. However, I am advocating the rejection of false teaching and false teachers.
Jesus gave clear New Testament instructions on dealing with false teachers in His beloved Sermon on the Mount. “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matt. 7:15).
How will the wolves in sheep’s clothing be recognized? “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” (Matt. 7:16).
Their message will eventually reveal whether they are genuine or fake. Jesus sternly warned these ravening wolves who feed on His flock for their own greedy gain:
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matt. 7:21-23).
I am not claiming that White is unsaved. Only God knows the truth about her or other false prophets. However, Jesus says that some false prophets are not born again and thus will not be in heaven.
By the way, White was not alone in falsely prophesying Trump’s 2020 reelection. Other well-known pastors like Greg Locke dogmatically proclaimed that Trump would win in 2020. After the fact, some would-be prophets like Jeremiah Johnson apologized for being wrong about Trump in 2020. New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) leaders like Kris Vallotton from Bethel Church in Redding, Calif., similarly apologized for his false Trump prophecies.
If Jesus warned us to beware of false prophets, why are some Christians still listening to them? At a minimum, their credibility is ruined by their false prophecies. Why would President Trump place a false prophet as head of the White House Faith Office?
Dangerous Doctrine – Dangerous Decisions
White has close ties to the NAR. Its dangerous mistreatment of Scripture has created some unbiblical beliefs and practices. For example, some NAR adherents practice grave soaking. They visit the graves of people considered spiritually powerful and attempt to absorb the anointing of the deceased. This practice of necromancy is prohibited in Scripture (Deut. 18:10; Gal. 5:19-20). Christians do not receive spiritual strength from the deceased but from the Holy Spirit who lives within believers (Rom. 8:11).
White’s prosperity preaching is also dangerous. One must twist Scripture out of context to conclude that being right with God equals health, wealth and prosperity. Have they ever read the book of Job? The Apostle Paul was on fire for God while suffering physically and financially. Many of his writings fly in the face of this false teaching (1 Tim. 6:6-10; Phil. 4:10-20).
Sadly, some people who latch onto this false gospel turn away from Jesus and the church when trouble strikes. Instead of rejecting the fake and turning to the truth, they turn away from God completely. This is the real tragedy of false teaching. It’s like hiding poison in a glass of life-giving water.
Bible Prophecy and the Quest for the White House
For those who don’t think end-times views make much difference, consider this Exhibit A: The NAR teaches that Christianity will dominate seven key areas of society including politics, education, media and the arts. Its Seven Mountain Mandate says that God’s kingdom is here now and that Christians will dominate every area of society, bringing the kingdom of heaven to Earth.
White and fellow NAR dominion theology devotees view her appointment as a foot in the door of the most powerful office in the world and another step toward ushering in God’s kingdom now. Some of the Seven Mountain Mandates are written into the White House Faith Office’s official functions including education, family and politics.
However, the Bible is clear…
The kingdom is not now. It is still in the future (Zech. 14).
Christians will not bring the kingdom down. Jesus will. A proper reading of Bible prophecy makes this easy to understand.
We are not the hero of this story. Jesus is. Rev. 19:11-21 describes Jesus’ victorious Second Coming. The only role the saints play is to tag along.
We won’t even swing a sword. Jesus is the victor. Jesus – not His saints – brings in His Millennial Kingdom.
I pray that the president will ignore the false gospel and bad theology of White and others. I pray he has advisers who alert him to his dangerous selection. I pray that people wake up to false teachings and false teachers. I pray that people will turn to God’s truth with their whole hearts, Paula White included.
