Elijah’s Mantle

| Josh Shields

And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. 2 Kings 2:14

The prerequisite for Elisha receiving a double portion of Elijah’s spirit was recorded in 2 Kings 2:9. Elijah said unto Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.” When Elijah was caught up, Elisha rent his own clothes and reached down to pick up the mantle that fell from Elijah.

It is one thing to have a request and make the request known. It is another to follow through. Elisha could have sat in mourning and self-pity and become depressed, unhappy, blue, miserable, and disgruntled. Instead, he took off the covering he had been walking in, picked up the covering of Elijah and headed back to the river Jordan. Upon his arrival at the river Jordan, he smote the waters and said, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”

Too many of us come to our finest hour or moment and stage fright hits us. It is our turn, our time. The torch has been passed on. Yet, we stand in limbo at the dividing line, and we pause, hesitate, and question our callings, abilities, and gifts.

Today, stop questioning your training, leadership abilities, personality, or giftings. Don’t put in a request and then hesitate when your time comes. Have the courage to accept the challenge and carry on with the God-given conviction that has been handed to you. The mantle may not look like much. It may look outdated, worn, and tattered, but it is enough to part the waters of your future.

Our prayer for you this week: May you find the courage to pick up what has been passed down to you and carry on to greater heights.
