Thank God For the Kids

| Josh Shields

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

The famous Oak Ridge Boys quartet sang, “Thank God for kids, there’s magic for a while, a special kind of sunshine in a smile. Do you ever stop to think or wonder why the nearest thing to Heaven is a child?”

A few days ago, Gigi and I were invited by our grandchildren to participate in the elementary school’s “Donuts with Grandparents” breakfast. The intermediate had “Lunch with your Grandparents” the same day. The night before the events with our grandkids, we were in conversation with our grands, and each one placed an order of what they would like for us to bring to them the next day for breakfast and lunch.

Our grandson wanted chocolate Daylight Donuts with sprinkles. Our granddaughter ordered a Sonic cheeseburger with ketchup only, onion rings, and “we didn’t have to, but if we wanted to,” a medium strawberry lemonade. Did we get them what they asked for? Absolutely! They knew the secret to the equation: ASK with confidence.

Do you realize how complicated we make things? We take our request to God and spend more time telling Him what He already knows than we do trusting Him with our situation. Somewhere, this thing called maturity hits us, and all the faith, hope, and trust seem to escape us.

Just like us, the disciples had lost contact with the power of childlike faith. All the appreciation of kids, the chatter, laughter, and energy become something we do not want to contend with. Have we ever considered the words of Jesus? Be converted. Become as a little child. Our grands put in an order, said thank you in advance, hung up, and received it. Maybe this should be our approach, and the Kingdom of Heaven might just be at our disposal.

Our prayer for you this week: May you become as a little child and hear the sounds of hope, faith, and love in your life.
