The common things of life

| Josh Shields

“Therefore, shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”

Proverbs 1:31-32

It’s amazing how the common things are no longer appreciated. Seems like no one is happy with everyday living anymore.

We have become spoiled in our pursuit for prosperity, ignoring the wealth of the common things of life. Have we lost the value of a common hug, good morning, I love you, or have a good day amidst all the technological wizardry that is going on?

The value of life has dissipated in lieu of designer tennis shoes and phones. Friends have been replaced by Facebook, Twitter, and texting

We used to have common values, like a conversation with a cup of coffee sitting at a thing called a tabletop. Now we wonder what has happened to our world. Could it be destruction by our own devices?

Country music icon John Conlee sang it best when he sang a song called “Common Man.

“I’m just a common man, drive a common van

My dog ain’t got a pedigree

If I have my say, it’s gonna stay that way

‘Cause high-browed people lose their sanity

And a common man is what I’ll be”

He went on to say…

“I’ll take a Chevrolet just any day

So give your daddy back his Mercedes Benz.”

Nothing against a Benz at all, but common wheels will go just as many places.

So this week, lets slow down and enjoy our spouse, family, friends, and churches. Engage your pastor, Sunday School teacher, and music director. You might find out the common things are still the best things in life.

Our prayer for you this week: May we get back to the common things of life, changing our world.
