What Freedom Costs

| Josh Shields

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

The 11th of this month, I hope you took a little time to step aside from your normal routine in a moment of gratitude for the freedoms you enjoy today. From those who fought in the American Revolution, War of 1812, Indian Wars, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, to the Global War on Terror, thank you.

To every wife, mother, grandmother, husband, father, and grandfather who lost a child, spouse, or grandchild, may we take a moment to pray for you. Though our words will never fill the void, may our salute be heartfelt as we give condolence and respect in thanksgiving for your sacrifice.

To every young man and woman who never knew parenthood, whose life was snuffed out way too soon, to all the airmen who lost their lives in flight, to every seaman who took the oath to go down with the vessel in defense of their nation, to every infantry man who laid down their life on foreign soil, thank you.

To every soldier who walked holes in their boots, airman that flew thousands of miles, and seaman who sailed around the world that came home riddled, battered, and broken, to every prisoner of war who was malnourished, tortured, and seemingly forgotten, thank you. To every veteran of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard, thank you.

I for one as a Pastor, along with Southwest Radio Church, extend our deepest thank you to all those like my grandfather, that stormed the beach at LeHarv, crossed France, fought in the Battle of the Bulge where 75,000 lives were lost, then crossed the Rhine River into Germany, all while barely being out of his teens. We enjoy our freedoms today because of heroes like you. We Salute you.

Our prayer for you this week: May we never forget what freedom cost.
