2 Corinthians 10:12
“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
It never ceases to amaze me how many people find themselves doing just what the scripture declares not to do, compare themselves with someone else. The disease is in every hallway, break room, cubical, office, and boardroom. One common denominator seems to ring, from truck driving to the dock worker. From the salesman to the shipping department, CEO to CFO, pastor to parishioner, no one is exempt or left out. We all fight the syndrome of self-esteem, lack of confidence, and fire in our bellies.
The Psalmist fought it as well when he penned in Psalms 73:2-3, “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” As I said, no one is exempt. You can be a king and struggle with the successes of others.
How many of us this week said to ourselves, “If I could drive what they drive, if I had their money, had their ability, could sell like them, if I had their smile, hair, eyes, build, strength, and charisma…” Too many of us do not realize the impact we could, can, are, and will make if we could only come to understand God made us to be us and no one else. Only you can make the impact needed in your world. If God had wanted someone else to have made a difference in the company, church, county, city, block, neighborhood, and house He would have put them there, but He didn’t. He put you there.
Starting today, set goals against yourself, last year’s performance, attendance, sales, preaching, ministering. The only way to get better, wiser, faster, and more impactful is to better yourself against yesterday.
